AI4Health project granted

AI4Health is a 10-year national public-private programme on trustworthy, fair, and impactful AI for healthcare (25M euro from NWO — see the UMC Utrecht announcement). From a software engineering perspective, the project is especially interesting because it treats healthcare AI not as isolated models, but as socio-technical software systems that must be validated, deployed, monitored, updated, governed, and integrated into real clinical workflows.

The programme addresses the full AI lifecycle: FAIR and federated data infrastructures, responsible and explainable AI development, external validation and real-world evaluation, vendor-agnostic deployment, interoperability, orchestration, and post-market AI vigilance. It explicitly includes topics such as multi-vendor architectures, workflow integration, human-AI interaction, software ecosystem governance, interoperability, and regulatory alignment. Within the consortium, Slinger Jansen contributes expertise on software ecosystem security, governance of multi-vendor AI architectures, and end-user privacy in AI platforms.

For the VERSEN community, AI4Health provides a strong national-scale research context for software engineering research on trustworthy AI systems, continuous deployment and monitoring in safety-critical environments, software architecture for healthcare AI, requirements engineering, interoperability, governance, and long-term evolution of complex AI-enabled software ecosystems.
